Enabling faster, and reliable detection of laser threats through advanced optical and scintillator coatings

Laser Warning Systems (LWS) are critical to modern defence platforms, providing early detection of laser threats such as rangefinders, target designators, and beam-riding systems. To perform effectively, these systems must accurately detect and differentiate laser signals across UV, visible and IR wavelengths in real-time and ofeten in demanding environments. These systems rely on precise control of light across UV, visible, and infrared wavelengths to identify threats quickly and accurately.

At the heart of this performance are optical coatings and functional detection layers, which
determine:

  • Which wavelengths are detected or rejected
  • Signal strength and clarity
  • Overall system sensitivity and reliability

Scintacor Capability

Scintacor develops custom coatings tailored to laser warning applications, combining optical filtering with light conversion technologies to enhance detection performance.

Why not InGaAs?

While InGaAs remains the conventional technology for laser warning detection, its cost can constrain large-scale deployment. Scintacor’s coating-based solutions offer a fundamentally different approach, enablingcost-effective detection architectures that support increased sensor density and the shift towards distributed,high-volume defence platforms

Why Scintacor?

Scintacor develops advanced optical coating and detection layer technologies for laser warning systems on modern defence platforms. These systems detect laser threats such as rangefinders and designators across UV, visible, and infrared wavelengths.

Scintacor’s custom coatings precisely control spectral response, improving signal clarity, and sensitivity. Compared with conventional InGaAs-based approaches, Scintacor’s solutions offer a more cost-effective and scalable alternative, enabling distributed sensor architectures and higher deployment densities across defence platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

InGaAs remains widely used, particularly for infrared detection. Scintacor’s coating-based approach offers an alternative architecture that can support:
  • Lower system cost at scale
  • Higher sensor density for distributed sensing
  • Flexible spectral response across multiple wavelength bands

Yes. Coatings are fully customised to match the required spectral response, environmental conditions, and integration constraints of each platform or application.

Scintacor coatings can be applied to optical components or detector layers, enabling integration into both new system designs and upgrades of existing platforms without fundamental redesign of the detection architecture.
